What DPI Do You Need to Print a T-Shirt? A Plain Guide

How DPI works for shirt printing, how many pixels a full front print needs, and how to fix a low-resolution design before ordering.

What DPI Do You Need to Print a T-Shirt? A Plain Guide

Short answer: aim for 300 DPI at the size it will print. A full 12 × 16 inch front print needs about 3600 × 4800 pixels. Below 150 DPI, edges look soft on fabric.

DPI is about print size, not the file

DPI (dots per inch) only means something once you know how big the print is. The same 1800-pixel-wide image is:

| Printed width | Effective DPI | Result | | --- | --- | --- | | 6 in | 300 | Sharp | | 9 in | 200 | Fine for most art | | 12 in | 150 | Visibly soft on lines and text |

So "Is my image 300 DPI?" can only be answered together with "how wide will it print?"

Pixels you need

| Print size | Pixels at 300 DPI | | --- | --- | | 4 × 4 in chest print | 1200 × 1200 | | 10 × 10 in centre print | 3000 × 3000 | | 12 × 16 in full front | 3600 × 4800 |

Most AI image generators output around 1000 to 2000 pixels, which is below 300 DPI for a full front print. That is why fast AI drafts need upscaling before printing.

How to fix a low-resolution design

  1. Upscale with an AI upscaler, not by resizing. Plain resizing just enlarges the blur.
  2. Upscale the transparency too. If only the colors are upscaled, the cut-out edge stays jagged and shows as a halo on dark shirts.
  3. Make it smaller. A 9-inch print needs fewer pixels than a 12-inch one.
  4. Keep text as text. Real font layers are vectors and print sharp at any size.

In VibePrint, the print check shows the live DPI of each layer at its current size, and Make print-ready upscales it to 300 DPI with the edges handled separately.

Do you need a vector file?

For direct-to-garment printing, a clean 300 DPI PNG with a transparent background is the standard. Vectors matter for screen printing and embroidery, which use separate color plates or stitch paths.
